Hondo Dave Rutschman is a Soto Zen priest in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.
I began practice in Texas, sitting regularly at the Austin Zen Center, Houston Zen Center, and (the earliest version of) San Antonio Zen Center. I received jukai from Seirin Barbara Kohn in 2005, and ordained as a priest with Setsuan Gaelyn Godwin in 2010. I spent time at Tassajara in 2006-7 and 2009, doing practice periods with Tenshin Reb Anderson, Ryushin Paul Haller, and Myogen Steve Stucky. From 2008 to 2012, I worked on koan introspection with Myoun James Ford, Myozen Melissa Blacker, and Dayan David Rynick of Boundless Way Zen. These days, I sit when I can at the Berkeley Zen Center.
My wife Devon Miller and I live in Alameda, California with our two young children. I work as a grief counselor for a nonprofit Bay Area hospice, and also maintain a small private practice as a therapist.
My book of short stories, Into Terrible Light, is available from Amazon (of course) or directly from the publisher.
