A Dharma Brother

How wonderful and strange to be able to witness the shukke tokudo priest ordination of my brother Hondo Dave Rutschman-Byler!  On November 13, 2010 at the Houston Zen Center, witnessed by an assembly of the fourfold Sangha, he received the Bodhisattva Precepts, robe, bowl, and lineage papers from Setsuan Gaelyn Godwin.

Hondo and I now share two lineages – the Rutschman-Byler and the Suzuki Roshi.  I have many Dharma brothers and sisters, and I have even shared rooms with some of them (rather more cordially, I’d add), but none but Rev. Hondo have known me since the day I was born, have shared with me the same blood, the same mothers milk, the same childhood addresses, the same joys and upsets of our family’s odd journey.  None know me even half as well.

Yunyan was of the family Wang and Daowu of the family  Zhang, yet their intimacy as brothers is still cherished today.  How much more the opportunity Hondo and I now share, to let our dual brotherhoods reinforce, nurture, and deepen one another.

May this intimacy and Dharma joy radiate throughout space and time for the benefit of all beings.

Nine bows, Reverend Brother, and deep congratulations.

  1. This made me tear up. I’m still teary. So happy you both are at home in the world, or have left home, or whatever it is. Two brothers who have taught me more as an adult and done me more good than I can say during two very difficult/critical times in my practice–early and earlier. Thank you both so much. Gigantic love!
