San Quentin Zen

The Buddhadharma Sangha at San Quentin State Prison, founded in 1999 by Zen teacher Seido Lee deBarros, has been meeting every week for over ten years. Like other Soto Zen Buddhist Sanghas, we practice seated zazen meditation, walking kinhin meditation, ceremonies, Dharma talks and discussions, and one-day sittings. We have also observed various special events, including two Jukai lay-ordination ceremonies and an inmate-led Shuso ceremony. The group has helped many inmates to ground themselves in their inner freedom, and as brought inspiration to the hundreds of volunteers who have participated over the years.
