Hondo Dave Rutschman is a novice Soto Zen priest in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.
I began practice in Texas, sitting regularly at the Austin Zen Center, Houston Zen Center, and (the earliest version of) San Antonio Zen Center. I received jukai from Seirin Barbara Kohn in 2005, and ordained as a novice priest with Setsuan Gaelyn Godwin in 2010. I spent time at Tassajara in 2006-7 and 2009, doing practice periods with Tenshin Reb Anderson, Ryushin Paul Haller, and Myogen Steve Stucky. Since 2008, I’ve done koan introspection with Myoun James Ford, Myozen Melissa Blacker, and Dayan David Rynick of Boundless Way Zen.
My wife Devon Miller and I recently moved back to California after four years in Providence, Rhode Island. We live in Oakland with our baby son Gabriel and three cats. I work as a grief counselor for a nonprofit Bay Area hospice.
